Were definition is - past tense second-person singular, past tense plural, and past subjunctive of be Was vs Were As simple as that, in past tense, was is used for singular noun/pronoun and were for plural

However, sometimes If I was or If she was is correct! Dec 11, 2013 · There´s no doubt linguistically that were is the correct use, it is the subjunctive and is used to talk about a potential situation (if I were a rich man, I would buy a yacht)
